Against the Grain

In photography "grain" refers to images that are not sharp, that appear to be "grainy". This is usually caused by having a too high ISO, but can also be caused by oversharpening in post editing. Photos shot in low light, using a too high ISO to compensate is common. The photos look as if they have tiny grains of sand all over them Here are some examples of what I mean:

You can see the grain particularly in the mountains in the distance, and the sand
