In November , I decided to try to capture my first sunset, and went to beautiful Island View Beach in Central Saanich, BC. I got there about an hour before sunset. My aim was to practice shooting in low light. Looking back I realise how hampered I was not using (or understanding) anything about Exposure Compensation. They give the images a somewhat gloomy feel, although I confess I quite like the "moody" look.
These were taken with the Canon 18-55 mm kit lens
This is the first image I took. f5,1/1600,ISO 100,38mm, AV. I note I have remembered to have the aperture wider, but could have gone lower. I did not set out to have the background blurred but I quite like that.
f5.6, 1/1000sec,ISO 100,38mm, AV. A rare foray into post production, using the free version of Photoscape X . Probably one of the better images I have produced. I would have liked the reeds in the foreground to be sharper.
f3.5, 1/2000 sec ,ISO 100,18mm, AV. I stopped down the aperture and achieve better exposure, but the darn pole!
f3.7,1/2000 sec,ISO100, 18mm, AV. So with Photoscape X I remove the pole. however it leaves that thin darker transparent mark on the left hand side , and I have not figured out how to deal with that. Still, the pole has gone!
f10, 1/250sec ,ISO 100,18mm, manual mode. Super grainy , but I wanted to try a manual mode shot, as things got darker. Again , my lack of experience is self evident, aperture way too small, and shutter speed way too fast for this light. However, that's the learning isn't it?
f.3.5,1/4000 sec, ISO 100, 22 mm AV. I decided to experiment with shooting directly at the setting sun. I remembered to have a lower aperture and faster shutter speed. Still very under exposed.
f11,1/320 sec, ISO 400, 18mm, AV. Grainy, but the light is nice.
f 4.5, 1/100sec, ISO 400, 34mm, manual mode. Manual mode mayhem! Well, there is usually one!
f 4.5,1/4000sec, ISO 1600, 34 mm SV. Last shot of the day, and I probably thought "oh do one in shutter priority for the hell of it". So I did , again the colors are nice but the image is horribly noisy.
All in all I enjoyed this session, I was outdoors in a beautiful setting, and getting to know the camera better. For more images from this shoot, please go to the gallery page!
