I ventured out to Island View Beach on June 26 2023 to capture the sunrise. It was the second time I had been up early to do this. The following pics are presented to highlight some of the challenges in shooting in the 'blue hour" prior to sunrise, and just after sun up. I had checked on line prior for some suggested settings. I used aperture priority for these images.
F9/1/80sec/ISO 100/-0.7 EC/10mm/AV mode I used my wide angle Sony 10-18 mm wide angle lens for these images.
I kept the ISO low but could have possibly bumped it up a little. I have learnt that a lot of photographers shoot everything underexposed because of the ability to bring up the highlights in post editing, and I adopted this approach. The risk is that post editing can produce some grain. In the above image there is probably too much shoreline, with dark negative space.
F.9/1/15sec/ISO100/-0.7 EC/10mm/AV mode
I like the colours here but again perhaps too much shoreline.
F.22/1/500sec/ISO1000/-o.7 EC/16mm/AV mode
There is some grain due to the high ISO. One of the nice things about digital photography is that you can experiment a lot as you are not having to think about the cost of wasting film. I bumped up the aperture to see what transpired. The camera set the ISO and shutter speed.
Here is the same shot after some post editing. I prefer the sky in the edit.
The sea at sunrise is always a good subject!
