In Da "Hood"! A mooch around Quadra Village. Part 1

When we first arrived in Canada in 2006, we spent the first few months renting in Quadra Village. We lived in the only rental in Victoria (or so it seemed) that would accept our two dogs. This house, on 5th avenue was later termed "the hovel". However, I quite liked the edgy feel to the village, and return there from time to time. Everyone said Quadra Village was the next big "up and coming' area. 16 years later it still is, but a sign of progress is the hovel is no more- it is now a new apartment block with a trendy childrens kindergarten at street level.

The other day I had some time to spare before a meeting on Kings Street, so I decided to just mooch around the hood, not try too hard to take fantastic shots, but give myself permission to just experiment and shoot whatever took my eye. Todays blog post is part 1, with part two to follow. All images taken using Sony a 6000 camera with Sigma 30mm 1.4 Prime lens.

A young woman's pretty pink shoes
Pretty in Pink

As soon as I saw the pink shoes I saw the composition for the shot. This was the first image taken that day and one of my favourites.

A plank of wood being thrown through the air from a building site
Mind your head!

f/8, 1/640 sec, ISO 500, EC -0.7 30mm MM

I watched this guy throw the planks from the building and saw a chance to practice using a fast shutter speed. I am pleased I caught it mid flight.

A long symmetrical patterned shadow from a fence
Patterns

f/8,1/250 sec, ISO 100 , EC 0, 30mm MM

I was attracted to the symmetrical shapes of the reflection from the fence as it went the length of the driveway. A "snails eye" image.

Two lad sitting in a park engrossed with the cell phone
Engrossed!

f/8,1/100 sec, ISO 100, EC 0,30mm MM

These two lads were so engrossed in looking at the phone they did not see me take a number of pics. A candid street image.

By not having a "goal", and just going with the flow as I wandered around , I feel I more photographic possibilities opened up to me, leading me to think perhaps this is the approach I should always take!
