Push The Button!

It doesn’t matter how often us beginners are exhorted to read the manual, it’s just plain boring and tedious right? Which explains how I would look at the AEL button on the back of my Sony, and carry on wondering. A quick read would have explained all.

On a recent camera shoot with Victoria Photography Group, our instructor Ron Pogue explained how this works. This is what I understood:

The camera automatically adjusts the exposure in automatic or semi- automatic mode (aperture priority, shutter priority , auto ISO etc).

AEL locks the automatic exposure.

Press the AEL button as I focus and the exposure will be locked at the point I press it.

Keeping the button pressed, I can move the camera unit until l I stop pressing the button.

If a picture is underexposed, I would move the camera to a darker spot, press the AEL button, then bring back to original composition. If overexposed, point at brighter part, press AEL button, recompose then take the image.

Keep button held until image taken.

Here are two helpful videos that explain this process. The second one Is particularly helpful as it shows how to lighten a dark environment, and encourages us to not be afraid of committing the cardinal sin of blowing out the highlights!

This could be game changer when shooting fast images and I don't have time to fiddle about with exposure compensation settings!
